After doing some research, Bob (A guy I work with) and I have found a loophole in getting certified as a First Assistant. O.K. in order to be a Surgical Technologist First Assistant, I would need to go back to school. $5,000.00 and 2 more years. But there is not many Colleges offering the program. So, what the AST (Association of Surgical Technologists) has done is offered current Tech's that meet certain requirements the chance to sit for the exam WITH OUT going to school. The requirements are at least to years experience assisting as well as 350 cases, scrubbed. Hell, I have been scrubbing for 8 years now, as well as having done well over 350 cases. There is a form that needs to be filled out by 2 Surgeons. Now all I need to do is get experience in suturing. I spoke with our OB/GYN doctor today and he is all for teaching me how to suture, and he said he will sign anything to further our education. So, I learn to suture, then $299.00 for the test. done.
