Dog Training Update

For the past 2 weeks, Training has been canceled. So, this was the 1st week we have worked the dogs in 3 weeks. The girls and I were a but nervous, thinking that Molly would forget everything and Sam would go crazy. But to our surprise things went very well. It took Sam a few minutes to settle down and realize what he needed to do. Courtney handled Sam with ease. He didn't drag her around and this weeks new lesson was the stand stay. The dog needs to stand next to you while someone comes over and pets him. Sam is so used to sitting next to her, because that is what we taught him, he just kept sitting. So, a leader and Courtney had to pick him up under his belly and get him to stand. It was a sight to see, that is for sure.

Molly was wonderful. She is getting better at listening to Sarah. She even sat on her own without Sarah pushing her down. Sometimes Sarah had to just put her hand on Molly's behind, but there was no more forcing her to sit. For the Stand Stay command, Molly did better than Sam, she just stood there. But when a leader came over to pet her Molly didn't stay very well. Her Whole body started to wiggle as she wagged her tail. It was super sweet! Another leader had the kids put the dogs in a sit stay, and then he just dropped a metal folding chair. I about jumped 10 feet. I had no clue he did it on purpose until it was over. But Sam didn't move a inch. I didn't see Molly, but I'm sure she was all over the place.
We had a great night, Sarah feels better about using Molly and maybe Sam won't look like a sausage for much longer.

Thanks for the update!! While the classes were canceled, couldn't they practice the sit and stay at home? I am just curious....Also, just curious about the sit command....Have Sarah put a treat right in front of Molly's nose. When she shows intrest in the food, thats when you raise the hand very slowly up and a little back. When her head follows the food up, her butt naturally drops to the ground. If she jumps or start to play, just say nothing. Withhold the treat and do not give it to her. Just wait and try again. As long as Molly is still interested in that treat, keep offering her a change to get it.....Remember you are not saying anything until the butt hits the ground, then that begins the word association. When she sits, that is when you say sit. As you give her the food.....Oh and the piece of food should be small and soft enough so that she swallows it right down. Give her the treat as soon as she sits. The faster she gets it,the faster Molly will figure out what she did to get it....As soon as she eats that piece say sit again and give another tiny piece while she is sitting......that is why the treat is small so you keep giving the positive reinforcement..(I love the string cheese for this....cut it very tiny) ..She will learn that if she keeps sitting I will get more treats.....Always praise, too.....see they told us never to cut out the treats all together.....because after they have learned it, a pat on the head is good, too....I don't know why I started on a roll.....LOL.....Try this all week at home and she will be the best pup sitting at the next class....:-)

Hope this helps!! Hugs!! :-)

I remember years ago when we got our German Shepherd Rocky and I took him to obedience school.. Ah yes that could be a VERY long story.. Short and sweet is he worked better for a man with Strength, and that's where I got bit in the dupa! Ohh so sore for sometime.
Some day I'll tell you all my tales of those sessions.. got a few!!! But it was an experience to remember.
(((hugs)) to all..P.S. What does all that openID and pictures mean below??
